da 888casino: Since his arrival at Elland Road in the summer, Marcelo Bielsa has transformed Leeds United’s fortunes. Having only spent modestly in the subsequent transfer windows, whilst introducing an exciting style of play and bringing through youth talents, and having lost the services of Samu Saiz, the scale of the Argentine coach’s impact is remarkable.
The Whites finished 13th in the Championship last season, yet Bielsa now has the them in the thick of the title hunt and playing scintillating football too, all with almost entirely the same squad.
Bielsa gets plenty of respect from some of the top managers in the game, but former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder and Sky Sports pundit Ryan Mason believes that the Leeds boss himself should be counted amongst the elite.
Are fans being priced out of the Championship as well as the Premier League? The angry Bolton fan in the video below certainly believes so…
What he said
Speaking on Sky Sports’ The Debate (05/03 22:00), as quoted by This is Futbol, Mason gave his verdict on what makes for a world class manager: “Every circumstance is different. You think of Klopp, Pochettino – these guys have gone into the club and completely transferred the whole football club. They’re in that bracket for totally different reasons.”
He was then asked if he considered Bielsa to be in that select group, and said: “Yes, of course, it’s incredible, he’s in the Championship with Leeds but from the outside looking at it the change in that football club is incredible.”
Up there with the best
Mason is right, just because Bielsa isn’t currently operating in a top flight, or working with one of the world’s biggest clubs, doesn’t mean his achievements aren’t remarkable. In fact, it probably makes his feats all the more impressive when it is considered that he is operating with a fraction of the resources afforded to the likes of Manchester City, Liverpool and Barcelona.
What’s more, the Championship is a notoriously tough and fiercely competitive division; a gruelling, 46-game campaign that pushes players and coaches to the limit. What Bielsa has done, and so quickly, in this environment is extraordinary. The Leeds boss certainly deserves to be ranked amongst the world class.
