da betsson: Last weekend saw Manchester United move three points clear of Manchester City at the top of the table. They’re the form team in the Premier League along with Arsenal who made it seven consecutive wins after beating Aston Villa. Bearing this in mind, it might be a shrewd move to include players from these two teams as the season draws to a close. That said, players with favourable fixtures should still be considered.
da supremo: The Captaincy Debate
Victor Moses might not be top of your list of captains. Yet his performances for Wigan have helped to lift the Latics in their fight for survival. Wigan hasn’t lost a match when Victor Moses has started since January, which illustrates the impact he has when playing. Moses managed to part the Red Sea in winning a penalty at Anfield last week. This helped to set Roberto Martinez’s side on their way to victory. With Wigan coming into form, Moses could well be a player to have an impact against Stoke.
However, Moses isn’t on the same level as say Gareth Bale. The Welsh winger has impressed for much of the season. Ironically enough though, the last time Bale picked up major points in Fantasy Football was against Wigan at the end of January when he netted twice in their 3-1 win. Since, Spurs’ and Bale’s form has dropped off significantly with the Lilywhites number three only getting two assists in his last six games. However, Swansea City visit White Hart Lane on Sunday afternoon. Although the Swans have been impressive this season, Bale could well reignite his and Spurs’ season this weekend.
Then again, with the scoring form Wayne Rooney’s displaying, he’s impossible to discount. The former Everton striker netted the only goal in Monday night’s win over Fulham. That was his eighth goal in his last six league games and he’s hitting form just as United need it most. He travels to Ewood Park on Monday night looking to extend this tally against the Premier League’s second worst defence.
The most consistent Premier League goal scorer though has been Robin van Persie. As Arsenal have continued their revival, van Persie has continued his scintillating record for the Gunners with seven goals in their run of seven consecutive league victories. Ahead of Arsenal’s meeting with QPR on Saturday, it’s important to consider the Dutchman hasn’t gone more than two league games without scoring this season.
The Captain: Robin van Persie – Yes, QPR have recovered but it’s hard to see the Arsenal forward not netting at Loftus Road
The Vice Captain: Wayne Rooney – The England forward’s form suggests he is a man to keep in contention this weekend.
Long Term Look
With eight games to go, it’s time to recommend a player who has settled into life on the pitch very well since arriving from Freiburg. Whilst other players in the Premier League have struggled with the weight of a price tag on their shoulders, Papiss Demba Cissé has thrived at Newcastle.
Whilst Demba Ba has been excellent for the Toon, Cissé has eased the pressure on his fellow forward with five goals in six appearances. The Senegalese international is priced modestly for a striker at £6.8 million. As Newcastle push for a Europa League place in the final eight games of the season, Cissé looks a useful option to have, especially ahead of this weekend facing a Liverpool team floundering in 2012.
