There finally seems like there is going to be an end to the Michael Jacobs transfer saga. He has this week has officially turned down the Cobblers offer of a new contract at Sixfields.
I for one am glad that the situation is finally coming to an end so that Aidy Boothroyd finally knows where he stands with regards to the young midfielder, and can start turning his attention to players he sees fit to replace him in the squad.
Jacobs will always be held in high regard by Cobblers fans as the lad always gave 100% for the team in claret & white and we have enjoyed seeing him progress from young prospect to a major first team player. As with most players who leave the club he will get abuse from the minority of fans for jumping ship, but I will not be on his back and look forward to seeing how his future pans out where ever he may go.
Jacobs is strongly being linked with a move to the Championship with Derby County but the club have this week come out and said that bids recieved so far have been way of the mark as far as they are concerned considering he has been at the club since he was an 11-year-old. They have also said that they have had enquiries from another Championship teams and one Premier League team, thought to be Reading. One thing is for sure the club will even go to tribunal if needs be to try and make sure they get the best price possible.
The League Cup draw took place on Thursday or as it is now known The Capital One Cup and we have been given an intriguing home tie against last season’s finalists Cardiff City. I for one am looking forward to this game as it will be the first game of the season and it gives us the chance to pit our wits against higher level opposition. I think it is maybe one that could get shown on TV this season as with our record in the competition over the last couple seasons as we do well against sides in the leagues above and we were the last team to beat last seasons winners Liverpool in the competition.
The league fixtures were released today and we have been given a tough start in Npower League 2. We face a trip to Spotland to face newly relegated Rochdale and then two tough home games against Rotherham United and Southend United. These opening fixtures will give us the chance to see how the new squad is going to compete as they pit their wits against three sides I believe will be there or there abouts come May. Rotherham who have made some big signings so far and apparently have more to come and they have already been installed by many bookies as favourites for the title, god I can’t wait for the 18th August when it all kicks off.
Another week of speculation about Clarke Carlisle this week as apparently the chairman has said our offer may not be the best he receives and may not end up at Sixfields next season. I hope he does as I believe he was a great leader of men and our team will need a leader to move on to bigger and better things. I have heard that a minority of fans have been harassing him into giving the club a decision either way on Twitter, in my opinion these fans should just leave the guy to make up his own mind and constantly going on him is not going to achieve anything if he joins great if not I am sure Aidy Boothroyd has other options to turn to!
Up The Cobblers!!
