Writing in The Irish Independent, Liverpool legend John Aldridge has suggested that Jurgen Klopp is taking somewhat of a risk by placing his backing in the squad’s current stars, and not making huge investments this summer.
What did he say?
After winning the Champions League at the end of last season, the transfer window has been a rather low-key affair at Anfield. The Reds have so far confirmed only Sepp van den Berg’s arrival, and from the early games in pre-season, it appears Klopp is looking to place greater faith in the club’s youth.
Despite their success last season, Aldridge raised the worry of the impact an injury or two could potentially have next season.
He said: “The big concern would be what happens if one or two of his front three of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino are out for an extended period. I’m not sure Liverpool would have the back-up performers to plug that gap, but finding players of that quality to sit on the bench in reserve would be no easy task.

“Klopp appears to have come to the conclusion that he has enough in his squad and I would trust him implicitly in making that judgement. This manager has proved himself to be a master of building harmony on and off the field during his near four-year reign at Anfield.”
A massive gamble
Whilst Aldridge is certainly right in pointing to the harmony and team spirit Klopp has fostered on the red half of Merseyside, the nagging feeling that the club’s depth in key areas is not quite as strong as it should be is prevalent.
Both Salah and Mane largely remained injury-free during the last campaign and it was no surprise to see the duo eventually share the Premier League’s Golden Boot. Sustained injuries to either of them could have a crippling effect on the side because the drop-off in quality to Klopp’s alternative options are so stark.

The Liverpool boss has undoubtedly earned the credit for people to trust in his decision-making; but that shouldn’t excuse him from having his thought process not being questioned at all. Could the likes of Divock Origi and Rhian Brewster spearhead the Reds’ attack were Firmino to suffer a long-term injury? As is often the case, these are all ‘ifs and buts’, but Klopp is taking a huge chance by opting not to splash the cash this summer.
