da betobet: Bayern Munich could appoint Thomas Tuchel as their new manager instead of Mauricio Pochettino, per Bild (extended coverage in their print edition).
What’s the word?
Pochettino, of course, is out of work following his sacking by Tottenham Hotspur at the end of November.
Bayern are on the lookout for a permanent manager after the sacking of Niko Kovac but Bild now reports that Tuchel is a prime target because of his close relationship with current caretaker boss Hansi Flick.
The German is currently managing PSG and it remains to be seen whether Bayern would be able to extricate him from the French capital, but Bild even suggests that Flick and Tuchel could work together on the sidelines.
That comes after Bild previously reported that Sporting Director Hasan Salihamidzic is a huge fan of Pochettino and that the Argentine could be appointed in the summer, having been given the time to learn German.
Who is that?! Can you name all of these obscure Spurs signings? Give it a go now…
A door closes
Pochettino has said that he is hoping to get back to work quickly but it seems like a particularly large door has closed here, with Bayern one of European football’s most iconic clubs.
It’ll be a boost to those who are looking to appoint him, though, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer under increasing pressure at Manchester United and Arsenal looking for a replacement to Unai Emery.
Of course, Bayern could come back to the well if Tuchel snubs them or they are unable to negotiate a deal with PSG.
Pochettino, clearly, has a big fan in the Allianz Arena boardroom and that could well work to his advantage if negotiations do collapse.
But one has to wonder if Pochettino will be willing to wait that long, particularly with potential jobs opening up in England.
Those in the boardrooms at Old Trafford and the Emirates have some thinking to do, with Pochettino seeming a more viable candidate by the day.
He could well line up against Spurs in the near future.
Meanwhile, Manchester United missed a major chance to bring in a former Spurs key figure.
