da bet vitoria: It was a hard-fought, but well-earned victory for Liverpool against Watford at Anfield on Saturday.
The Reds eventually won 2-0 thanks to a brace from Mohamed Salah, but that only came after a few scares. The Hornets, under new manager Nigel Pearson, put in a spirited performance, and did have a couple of decent chances, but they were unable to make use of them.
Jurgen Klopp will have been particularly happy with his defence. By not conceding against the team at the foot of the Premier League table, it was the Merseyside outfit’s second clean sheet in a row – overall, it is just their sixth of the season – and it came with Joe Gomez coming into the side at centre-back.
Can you name the result these iconic Liverpool images belong to? Give it a go now…
There have been questions asked of the 22-year-old, with him being a spectator for most of the campaign, but he emphatically answered those critics at the weekend.
Defensively, he was a rock. He made the most clearances amongst his teammates, with four, whilst he also managed two interceptions and three tackles as well. Not only that, he won five of the six ground duels he took part in, and also prevailed in seven out of 12 in the air as well. Troy Deeney targeted the England international, as you can see via the heatmap below, but he got little joy from the £31.5m-valued former Charlton man – as per Transfermarkt.
He also looked solid on the ball, picking up a pass accuracy of 86%, whilst he also managed one successful dribble as well. All in all, it was a good day at the office for the centre-back.
It has not been the easiest of seasons for the youngster. He was booed at Wembley by England fans following an altercation with Raheem Sterling at the Three Lions’ training camp, and he has had to watch Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip start the majority of games ahead of him in central defence. He had been slammed by portions of his own fanbase as well, whilst Danny Mills even suggested that Klopp does not think he is good enough.
Here, though, he showed just how valuable he is to the side, especially in the absence of Lovren and Matip through injury. If he puts in many more displays like this, then he could well be his boss’ first choice even when those two more experienced men return.
In other news, one man’s work-rate for Liverpool is under-appreciated.
